How Water Softening Systems Work
Hard water passes through the media tank that contains resin beads coated with sodium ions. The calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium (or potassium) ions, thus softening the water.
When the beads have trapped the hardness and need to be regenerated, the control valve charges them with brine (salt and water solution) from the brine tank. As regeneration occurs, calcium and magnesium (hardness) ions are freed from the beads, replaced with sodium or potassium ions; and the system is ready to soften water again.
There are three basic types of water softener controls that are used in residential applications to manage the regeneration process. The control valve will manage the frequency of recharging the resin beads that clean the water and flushing the contaminated water out of the system.

I contacted elders pure water a few times for different quotes, which they quickly gave over the phone. This was the only company willing to talk prices without coming out first, and I really appreciated that. The install tech showed up exactly on... time to install a new softener/ro filter for our house, and did an excellent job. Why not just buy a softener from a big box store or online retailer?
Big box stores sell softeners that are made with lower quality parts to reduce the price, even if you get name brand.
You will still have to hire a local plumber to do the install, unless you are quite knowledgeable in plumbing.
It can be difficult to get any warranty work done from a big box store, and often there is no warranty from online retailers.
In either case, you will usually just get referred to a local plumber who may not necessarily have knowledge of your specific equipment.
So essentially you are on your own once it reaches your house.
